How to crop an image to an exact aspect ratio

Uploading an image in the wrong proportions means the platform crops it for you — usually badly. Cropping to the target ratio yourself keeps the important part in frame.

Know the ratio you need

Square (1:1) for most profile photos. 16:9 for video thumbnails and slide backgrounds. 4:5 for portrait social posts. If you are unsure, the Aspect Ratio Calculator turns a target width and height into a ratio.

Crop with the ratio locked

Crop Image lets you lock the box to a ratio so it can only be resized in proportion.

  2. 2Choose the aspect-ratio preset you need (or Free).
  3. 3Drag the box to frame the subject; drag a corner to resize.
  4. 4Crop & download — the output is full resolution.

If you also need an exact pixel size

Crop first to fix the shape, then run Resize Image to hit an exact width and height. Doing it in that order avoids squashing the picture.
