How to compress an image without an obvious drop in quality

Pick the right format

Photographs compress best as JPEG or WebP. Screenshots, logos and anything with flat colour or text stay crisp as PNG — but a PNG photo is usually several times larger than it needs to be, so convert it first.

• •Screenshot / graphic with text → PNG, or WebP lossless.

Compress, then check

Use Compress Image and start around 70–80% quality.

2. 2Choose a quality around 75%.
3. 3Compare the result to the original at 100% zoom.
4. 4If it still looks fine, try one step lower; if you see blocky artefacts near edges, go one step higher.

Resize before you compress

A 6000-pixel-wide photo displayed at 1200 pixels is carrying five times too much data. Resize to the largest size you actually need first, then compress — the two together beat either one alone.
